Kumina is a cultural form indigenous to Jamaica. It is a religion, music and dance practiced by, in large part, Jamaicans who reside in the eastern parish on St. Thomas on the island. These people have retained the drumming and dancing of the Bantu-speaking peoples of the Congo. Kumina has been passed down through generations allowing the dancer to seem as if in a trance determined by the drummer. The hips, rib cage, shoulders and arms are involved as the dancer makes spins, dips and breaks in body movements throughout the dance.
The Western Dance Group incorporates this traditional dance which incorporates intricate and enchanting movements of feet shuffling in synch with waist rocking movements, to the melodious sounds of the drum leaving their audience with a revived rythm they can't help but moving to.
